SHE'S GOT LEGS

5-12-10 1

Anyone who knows me probably knows that I show up at every party at least 15 minutes late.  What can I say?  That's just me.  Case in point - it's Wednesday and I'm just now showing up for Academichic's Dress Your Best Week.  How could I not participate in something so awesome?!

I love the idea behind this, and I have to admit, it was hard coming up with 5 things I like about my body.  Not because I don't like my features, but because I rarely think about my body in terms if its pieces.  I kind of like the whole package, which is a point that I've worked really hard to get to.

A point even harder to get to?  Saying that I like my legs - especially in black tights.  I love how the strong black outline gives them the perfect silhouette.  They're no chicken legs - that's for sure.  But those curves serve me quite well.  And I assure you - they could kick your ass.  Ahem .. . sorry ...

Anyway, it's taken me a long, long time to embrace their short stature and thick presence.  I remember being conscious of my thighs when I was in 5th grade.  I remember the frustration that came out as tears when shopping for shorts in 7th grade.  Like any other young girl, I blamed my body - not the clothes.  I so badly wanted the long, slender legs that it seemed every other girl had.  But now, I'm more than content with what I have.  I love seeing the tone of my muscles and feeling them get stronger with every workout.  And I finally love that huge piece of flesh jutting out above my knee.  Hellooo - it's called a quad!

So, I guess the bottom line is this:  the weather still sucks, but I've learned to love my gams.

  1. I like this post. I think every girl feels awkward about their body, and no one is ever truly happy, but it's like you said, you have to learn to be content with what you have. I'm never going to be stick thin like many girls, or have a small cup size (something that I hate. I find it ironic that people get implants to be bigger and i want to be smaller).

Anyways. enough rambling. love the outfit. you look superb. and the top part of your dress is fabulous.

  2. Ok, love this! I adore the orange dress... I think orange can be hard to wear but it looks amazing on you. I also love your hair. You don't wear it down on the blog much lately, but you have very pretty hair.

Also, I can totally relate to being self conscious of my legs. I haven't gotten to the point of acceptance that you have... I am working on it. So thanks for sharing your story!

  5. I know what you mean about your legs-- mine were one part of me that it took a VERY long time to appreciate. I think it was becoming a runner that changed things for me-- now I think that my curvy legs are more attractive now than if they were skinny!

  8. This colour scheme is fab. The orange, and the khaki look so good with your hair colour Kyla!

I love that you love your body. It encourages me to love mine. Anytime I feel like I'd be happier looking like the sticks in a beauty magazine (it doesn't happen ALL that often) I think of you, and this blog, and how you encourage us to just rock our assets and accept our body as it is.

So what I'm trying to say is your sort of my role model :p Haha.

  9. You have awesome legs! They are showcased perfectly here!

Maybe one day I'll be able to love my thighs as much as I love my calves....

  10. I am so sad I missed out on this week. The posts are all so amazing to read.

Not to mention the outfits! I love everything about this - the colors, the pring, the whole package. And whoo for legs! Way to embrace them.

  12. Yeah girl! I've had muscular calves since like 2nd grade. I danced, mostly ballet, for 14 years and my muscle never went away. It has taken me awhile to recognize that most clothing is not designed for people with quadriceps, but I'm not ashamed. I also have kind of buff arms, which can make fitting jackets difficult. With this body I have kayaked 52 miles in british columbia, built a house in mexico and a house with habitat for humanity, threw shotput and discus in high school. I am proud of it and wouldn't trade it for anything.

  15. I love this outfit! You have me inspired to mix my winter and spring pieces. I've instead been dressing completely weather inappropriate all week!

  16. Trying to come up with five things you like about your body really makes you think. I'm guilty of having a slightly negative view of my body. I'll give this challenge a try.

And you are looking super adorable btw!! I love that dress!

  20. You look great, as usual. I remember back in middle school (and beyond, if I'm honest) I was always envious of the girls with non-stick figure legs like yours.

Took me a while to appreciate my twin toothpicks, but it feels good!

  23. You have great curvy muscular legs!

I love love love this outfit. The dress is such a gorgeous print and color. The light colored trench and your loose hair, and the black belt and tights and shoes all work together so well with that dress.

  25. Is it weird that I've always taken note of your legs? They're powerful and shapely and womanly. My thighs were always a point of contention for me growing up. But I love them now. They're muscular. And that's AWESOME. Rock it girl.

PS: I adore that dress. It's like a creamsicle!

  29. Your legs rock! They're strong and curvy and gorgeous and you should certainly show them off! I actually like my legs pretty well too..they have rounded calves that I used to think were bad, but that I now think are kinda cool--I suppose I should have particpated in this :)
    Great post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Man, you really DO have legs! I've always admired them- in fact, I think in a comment I may have once called them the best legs in blogger-land. :)

This post is really inspiring and, at the risk of being cheesy, I have to say that it really helps me change the way I view myself and my big ol' soccer calves, seeing both in a new, more positive light.

On a less mushy note, I adore that dress. It's really beautiful and subtle and rich. I want it! :)
