A PERFECT START TO A NEW YEAR

John and I spent a fantastic day with family.  Such a great way to start the year and a beautiful day from mother nature to boot!  My parents live an hour and half away, which make for a lovely afternoon drive. Here's some of my favorite scenery from along the way.  Pure white snow and blue skies.  What more could you ask for?

It was a pretty smooth ride. Until we got to my parents house, that is.  My parents still live in the house I grew up in, which sits on the side of a wooded hill with a very long, steep and curvy driveway.  I'm used to it and have battled it many winters.  Sometimes, I'd win.  Other times, I'd walk.  Today was one of the "other times."

The key to getting to the top is usually to just not stop or lose momentum.  John was driving, and growing up in Long Island, he's not quite seasoned for such driving.  And we got stuck halfway up on a hairpin turn.  I had him back the car up and switch spots with me, so I could give it a shot.  It was less than successful, but I did almost hit a tree (see below).

John about wet his pants and voted for parking the car and walking the rest of the way.

I couldn't stop giggling and taking pictures the whole way up.  In the seven years we've been together, this was the first time he got to experience the driveway walk of shame.

Here's a view of our car from the top of the driveway.  Needless to say, I grew up with some KICK ASS sledding!

John did get to help my dad get us unstuck and was lucky enough to ride the four-wheeler.  Nothing brings out his inner redneck quite like a spin on the ATV!

Now, there's a happy camper!

The pork, sauerkraut and yummy mashed potatoes made it all worth it!  Along with an awesome afternoon spent with family and even a little hair trim for myself  Thanks, mom!

Hope you all had a memorable first day of 2010!

  1. That looks like a beautiful drive and a wonderful place to grow up! That road reminds me of when we take RT. 68 through MD and WV.

  3. Wow and I thought my driveway was bad! But I'm sure the pork and sauerkraut made it worth it--that's one of my favorite New Year's traditions, it's so yummy!

  5. I knew I liked you. Lol. I have made the walk of shame home after getting stuck on the ice road and on the end of my parents road one night when my fourwheel drive went out. LOVE IT! I read your post to my hubby as I knew he would get a giggle out of it as well.

  7. I love this. I'm from NWPA and the winters there are so brutal. I went to PSU so I'm somewhat familiar with central PA winters as well. A sense of humor is an absolute MUST!

  8. Nom nom nom. Now that's the kind of home-cooked meal you definitely want after trudging up that crazy hill! I'm in Kansas, and it is FLAT here, yet every winter tons of folks end up in the ditch due to winter driving conditions. That hill scares the bejeezus out of me.

  9. Where you are from TOTALLY reminds me of where my family lives in PA. My dad lives at the verrrrry end of a two mile long dirt road (complete with a steep hill and many, many potholes). So I definitely understand the gravity of getting stuck on snowy hills! I hope you had a good holiday!

  10. Since I was traveling on New Year's this year, I didn't get to make the traditional sauerkraut and pork which makes me so sad. I'm happy to see that someone else carried on the tradition!
